The Tree for Life Garden is a community tree planting scheme from the 91猫先生, in partnership with . Freely Fruity is a local charity that promotes community orchards and fruit-growing projects.

The scheme allows parents, grandparents and carers in Shinfield to celebrate a child's birth or adoption.

What is the Tree for Life Garden scheme?

The Tree for Life Garden reflects the University's commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement.

Inspired by a local resident's wish to commemorate the birth of his son, the scheme enables families in Shinfield to mark the birth or adoption of a child by planting a tree.

The project supports local wildlife, creates new habitats and helps children build a lasting connection with nature. By taking part in planting and caring for their tree, families can learn more about green spaces, wildlife and biodiversity together.

Where is the Tree for Life Garden?

The Tree for Life Garden will be located between The Ridge and Alder Grove Primary School.

What will be featured in the Tree for Life Garden?

The Tree for Life Garden will feature:

  • apple, plum, cherry and pear trees, all grown from locally sourced varieties
  • a mown path
  • a wildflower meadow
  • blackberries
  • a bench
  • a water supply.

Who can apply?

Your child or grandchild will need to be under the age of 11 or due to be born in 2026. They need to live in Shinfield to be eligible.

There are 36 trees available, which will be randomly allocated. If applications are oversubscribed, the University will explore expanding the scheme in other areas of Shinfield.

When is the closing date?

The closing date to express your interest in planting a tree is Sunday 27 September 2026.

When will I find out if I have been reserved a tree?

After the closing date, the University will contact you to confirm if a tree has been reserved for you.

When will the trees be planted?

Planting for the Tree for Life Garden will start in October 2026.

Can I get involved with the planting?

We encourage anyone allocated a tree to take part in planting and future Tree for Life Garden activities.

How will I know which tree is mine?

When completing , please tell us if you would like your tree and the name of your child/grandchild added to the information board. This will be installed next to the Tree for Life Garden.

Please also indicate if you would like to receive a certificate to acknowledge the planting of your tree.

Are there any costs involved?

We don鈥檛 want cost to be a barrier to taking part in this scheme. We ask for a 拢5 donation for each tree planted. This will be given to Freely Fruity, our charity partner in this scheme, to support their local activity.

The 91猫先生 will fund all the work for this scheme and will not receive any of the donations.
